{"id":7033,"date":"2021-07-01T19:24:44","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T18:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.junabrookes.co.uk\/staging\/5147\/?p=7033"},"modified":"2021-07-01T19:30:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T18:30:43","slug":"teenage-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.junabrookes.co.uk\/staging\/5147\/teenage-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"How to deal with teenage anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is anxiety?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anxiety is the thought that you can\u2019t cope with your current situation or that something bad might happen at any time. \u00a0It\u2019s the emotions of worry and nervousness that go along with that thought. \u00a0And it\u2019s physical feelings like \u2018butterflies in the stomach, tension, shakiness, nausea and sweatiness.<\/p>\n<p>In these difficult times that we live in Anxiety is a normal reaction to challenging, unfamiliar or stressful situations.\u00a0 Teenagers and adolescents have had a very tough time over the last 18 months.\u00a0 In most countries, they have been unable to attend school or to meet with friends to decompress and destress.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been hard enough on adults let alone younger people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Anxiety in teenagers<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anxiety is very common in the pre-teen and teenage years.<\/p>\n<p>This is because adolescence is a time of emotional, physical and social change, which is all happening at the same time as\u00a0teenage brains structures and chemistry are changing. \u00a0Teenagers are seeking new experiences and more independence too. They want to venture out on their own and current restrictions have stopped this from happening.\u00a0 However, teenagers might also worry about the future, life paths, life changes, money, opportunities and challenges.<\/p>\n<p>For example, teenagers might worry about starting secondary school, sitting exams, looking a particular way, fitting in with friends and friendship groups, performing in sports teams,\u00a0 music performances, plays at school or going to social events. \u00a0Sometimes they might even have what an adult would consider irrational concerns \u2013\u00a0for example, that the world is going to end.\u00a0 Although the last 18 months might have changed a few adults minds about this.<\/p>\n<p>For everyone feeling anxious is a normal <strong>part of the normal range of emotions<\/strong>, just like feeling angry, frustrated, happy, sad or embarrassed. \u00a0For most teenagers and adolescents, anxiety is just a passing thing and doesn\u2019t last for long.\u00a0 However, for some teenagers, it doesn\u2019t go away or is so intense that it stops them from doing everyday things.\u00a0 This is when a trained professional can be needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Managing anxiety: helping teenagers<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Managing anxiety is an important life skill, which with the right help, teenagers develop. \u00a0Here are other key ways to help your teenager learn to manage everyday anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Talking can be difficult but is important<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the most important ways to help your teenager develop this skill is by <strong>talking with them about their worries<\/strong>. By talking openly about anxiety, you send the message that your teenager can come to you when they need to.\u00a0 And even if your child doesn\u2019t always want to talk, they\u2019ll know you\u2019re there to support them.<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your teenager about your own worries when you were their age. Remind your teenager that many teenagers feel anxious and that feeling anxious is normal.<\/li>\n<li>Talk with your teenager about their other emotions \u2013 for example, \u2018You seem really excited about the football match\u2019. This sends the message that all emotions, positive and negative, come and go.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/pre-teens\/communicating-relationships\/communicating\/active-listening\">Listen actively<\/a> to your teenager. Active listening is a skill that has to be learnt but will pay off and not just with your child.<\/li>\n<li>Let your teenager explain their feelings in their own words and don\u2019t rush to reassure them or solve problems for them. Sometimes your teenager just wants someone to vent to or run ideas by.\u00a0 Active listening lets your teenager know that you understand how they\u2019re feeling. \u00a0It can also help your teenager identify their thoughts and feelings, which is a good first step to managing them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Helping your teenager face their anxiety<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gently encourage your teenager to do the things they\u2019re anxious about. However, it\u2019s a fine line between encouragement and pushing your teenager to face situations they don\u2019t want to face.<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge your teenager&#8217;s anxiety and fear \u2013 don\u2019t dismiss or ignore it. It\u2019s very important for your teenager to feel that you take them seriously and that you believe they can overcome their fears. \u00a0Your teenager also needs to know that you\u2019ll be there to support them and pick up the pieces if it all goes horribly wrong.<\/li>\n<li>Help your teenager set small goals for things that they feel a little anxious about. Encourage your teenager to meet the goals, but don\u2019t step in too early or take control. It&#8217;s better to hang back as part of their support team.\u00a0 For example, your teenager might be anxious about the big game that coming up. \u00a0As a first step, you could suggest your child practises their skills with you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Helping your teenager explore and understand their feelings<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help your teenager understand that it\u2019s normal to go through a big range of emotions and that sometimes these can be strong emotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Thinking about your family life and routine<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make time in your family routine for things that your teenager enjoys and finds fun or relaxing. These could be simple things like playing or listening to music, reading books or going for walks.<\/li>\n<li>Spend time with people your teenager likes, trusts and feels comfortable around.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage a healthy lifestyle for your teenagers, with plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/pre-teens\/healthy-lifestyle\/physical-activity\/physical-activity-teens\">physical activity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/teens\/healthy-lifestyle\/sleep\/sleep-teens\">sleep<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/pre-teens\/healthy-lifestyle\/daily-food-guides\/nutrition-healthy-food-teens\">healthy food and drink<\/a>.
